Driving Sustainability Through Advanced Water Stewardship at the World Glass Complex, India
Date:
At Saint-Gobain’s World Glass Complex (WGC) in India, responsible water management is a critical pillar of the Group’s global sustainability commitment. Through advanced in-house treatment systems and closed-loop processes, we are continuously optimising water use, reducing freshwater consumption, and maximising reuse across manufacturing operations.
This commitment is reflected across multiple production lines at WGC, including fire rated glass manufacturing, float glass, mirror production and coated glass lines each working towards more optimized manufacturing practises.
Turning Process Waste into a Reusable Resource
Within the Vetrotech Fire Rated Glass Manufacturing line, an efficient Waste Gel Water Recycling System has been implemented to recover and reuse process water. The system separates sediments from clear water, allowing treated water to be safely repurposed for landscaping and gardening. This initiative not only reduces waste but also supports the development and maintenance of green spaces across the facility.
Closed-Loop Recycling in Grinding Operations
Water generated during grinding processes is routed to a dedicated Water Treatment Plant (WTP). Here, sludge is effectively separated, enabling the treated water to be reused for grinding and other similar applications. This closed-loop approach significantly reduces dependence on fresh water while improving overall operational efficiency.
Integrated Treatment Across the World Glass Complex
Water stewardship at WGC is built on an integrated and collaborative approach. Water from the Mirror and Coater plants undergoes comprehensive treatment at the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) before being recycled back into operations. Float line water is processed through two dedicated water treatment plants, further strengthened by adiabatic cooling towers integrated into the float water treatment system, substantially reducing water drawdown and enhancing conservation efforts.
Holistic Water Management Beyond Manufacturing
The sustainability framework at WGC extends beyond production processes to support holistic water management across the entire facility. A Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) treats wastewater from canteens, washrooms, and other facilities for safe reuse. In addition, two rainwater harvesting ponds, with a combined capacity of 152 million litres, are already operational, with a third pond currently under development. Together, these measures reinforce a robust and resilient water stewardship framework.
Through continuous investment in advanced treatment technologies and responsible resource management, Saint-Gobain remains committed to responsible manufacturing practices.
