Introduction

Beneath Porte Maillot in Paris, the Gare EOLE station on the RER E line opened in 2024. Designed to improve connections between Paris and the western part of the Île‑de‑France region, the station welcomes more than 35,000 passengers every day. Its spacious underground setting is naturally illuminated by a 150‑metre‑long glass floor and stands out for its contemporary architecture, far removed from the traditional image of a railway station.

In underground infrastructure, fire‑related risks are significantly increased. Smoke can accumulate, escape routes are limited, and every second is critical to enable the safe evacuation of users. Vetrotech therefore contributed its expertise by supplying firerated glazing solutions that combine transparency, robustness, and protection of people.

The solutions implemented, CONTRAFLAM® 60 and CONTRAFLAM® Lite 60, are used in inclined firerated glazed façades, firerated glazed partitions, and firerated glazed doors. These glazing solutions, with EI 60 and E 60 classifications, play a key role in containing flames, limiting heat transmission, and protecting circulation and escape routes.

Beyond their technical performance, the glazing systems support the project’s architectural ambition: allowing daylight to reach the platforms while ensuring a level of safety that meets the most demanding standards. In a space where every detail matters—from the inclination of glazed surfaces to the integration of vertical circulation—Vetrotech Saint‑Gobain and Calcagni Métallerie have demonstrated that safety and elegance can go hand in hand.

As a strategic component of the Grand Paris Express project, this station embodies a vision in which design, comfort, and protection come together to offer passengers a unique experience in a safe and bright underground environment.
