University Rostock
Introduction
The new building of the Institute of Physics at the University of Rostock campus, inaugurated in 2015, features a striking foyer where students are welcomed by an impressive collage of portraits of renowned scientists and physicists from past centuries. Created by artists Klaus-Dieter Eichler and Hannes Arnold, the artwork was integrated into fire-rated insulation glass partition walls that separate the entrance hall from the adjoining workspaces and auditorium.
The production process of the entire system was the most challenging part of the project: the artwork was first processed onto tempered glass with a digital print by Glassolutions Saint-Gobain Deggendorf. Subsequently, the glass panes were processed further as fire-rated safety glass by Vetrotech Saint-Gobain and finally installed into steel frame systems by Jansen. The fire rated glass partitions walls were installed over two floors by Kaiser Metallbautechnik GmbH. The university foyer now provides uncompromised safety in combination with artistic expression, inspiring its students every day.
