    Bullet Resistant Glass

What is bullet resistant glass ?

Bullet proof glass vs. bullet resistant glass: Know the difference.

While the phrase “bullet proof” is more common across our language than “bullet resistant,” it’s actually a misnomer. We all want to make sure our living spaces are as protected as possible, especially our schools.

However, “bullet proof" glass is technically impossible—there will always be a larger caliber projectile, or an intruder who shoots multiple times and weakens even the most fortified glazing.

Bullet resistant glazing is designed to give occupants and first responders the precious minutes they need to seek safety or to arrive on the scene.

And these are other standards that may come into play:

  • UL 1784, Standard for Air Leakage Tests of Door Assemblies and Other Opening Protectives
  • ANSI Z97.1, Safety Glazing Materials Used in Buildings – Safety Performance Specifications and Methods of Test
  • CPSC 16 CFR 1201, Safety Standard for Architectural Glazing Materials, for Category I or II as indicated in Table 2406.1.

How Vetrotech tests for bullet resistance

Testing in accordance with the standard UL 752 consists of a controlled, accurate shooting of multiple glass samples (generally 1 foot square) with 1-5 consecutive bullets shot in a required formation (see table below). Normal glass impacted by such a force breaks easily into pieces and opens the surface for consecutive shots – don’t take this risk. Precise testing of bullet-resistant glass ensures the reliable protection of the secured side by preventing ammunition from entering.

Additionally, all of Vetrotech's bullet resistant products are tested as complete assembles. This means that bullet resistant glass is tested within a VDS frame as a system, not individual parts. So you can trust that the entire system will keep you and your occupants on the safe side.

Did you know that a bullet from an Kalashnikov AK-47 impacts a surface with the speed of up to 1,500 mph? High-performance laminated bullet-resistant glass withstands the impact of the corresponding ammunition in accordance with the respective classification.

What is the Difference Between Bulletproof Glass, Bullet-resistant Glass, and Ballistic Glass?

Generally, you will hear the terms “Ballistic glass” or “bullet-resistant glass” when referring to safety glass. These two terms are interchangeable within the industry. Ballistic glass comes in a number of protective rating levels, from 1 to 8, which all provide different levels of safety in their various applications. Though the term is widely used, when it comes to building code and safety ratings within protective glass, the term “bulletproof glass” is a misnomer. Eventually, with enough shots from a high enough caliber weapon, all glass will eventually give way.
