State Building Authority Passau
Introduction
The Passau State Building Authority is located in the former headquarters of the Passau Finance Building Office that was built in 1988. The building complex consists of three pavilion-like office buildings that go up to four storeys high, with wood-and-glass façades made of self-supporting post-and-beam elements.
Thirty years after the construction of the building, the existing glass façades no longer met the current requirements for thermal insulation. As part of an energy-efficient renovation, glass curtain walls were introduced to enhance daylight access and create a visually light exterior envelope. In areas requiring higher protection levels, fire rated curtain walls were installed to ensure both fire safety and façade continuity without compromising transparency or aesthetic integrity.
Approximately 1,000 m² of CONTRAFLAM LITE 30 CLIMATOP fire-resistant safety glass was used to replace the original windows. This glass combines highly efficient protection against breakage and fire with excellent thermal insulation for façade applications. A special feature of the windows is the glass parapet elements with integrated enamel panes, which replace the previous panels made of sheet material.
The use of CONTRAFLAM glazing in this old structure is a successful example of the possibility to renovate an existing façade with the help of modern glazing that combines safety, comfort, and aesthetics. Thanks to Vetrotech Saint-Gobain's wide range of products and expertise, it was possible to preserve the identity of the building complex while upgrading it to the highest technical and energy efficiency standards.
Key Achievements
The striking façade of the existing building could be preserved and renovated to a high technical and aesthetic standard. Multifunctional glazing units were specially developed for this project.
The fire-resistant insulating glass solution with integrated enamel pane was developed in collaboration with the client, especially for this building complex.
With glasses from Vetrotech, complex requirements could be met with precision.
Key Challenges
- Renovation of existing buildings while maintaining the original façade appearance.
- Development of multifunctional glazing that is both functional (fire protection and thermal insulation) and aesthetically pleasing.
